On May 27, 2007, Pastor Berlin Guerrero of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines was abducted by unidentified armed men at around 5pm, in Biñan, Laguna. A former general secretary of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan - Southern Tagalog, Pastor Berlin is a political activist and a staunch defender of human rights.
The following day, after protests from church leaders and militant groups, Pastor Berlin's abductors turned him over to the local police in Cavite. He was tortured and maliciously accused of being a communist leader. Trumped-up cases of inciting to sedition and murder were filed against him.
Pastor Berlin is a victim of the Arroyo administration's crackdown against political activists.
