I had always thought Elfen Lied was the most violent of all anime shows, until I began watching Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni. A psychological horror thriller, it features the some of the best story arcs ever created. With two seasons all ready under it's belt, and a third season and a live action film adaptation on the way, Higurashi is proving to be one of the most popular anime series of all time.

Now, Elfen Lied, despite its often gruesome violence and dark tone, seems like a tamed puppy compared to Higurashi, which is set in June 1983 in the fictional town of Hinamizawa. Higurashi is the Eli Roth and Quentin Tarentino of anime shows and contains sequences of shocking and graphic horror violence and gore throughout, several prolonged sequences of toture, truly disturbing images, horrifying scenes of murder, as well as psychological terror. It is not suitable for young children. You would have to be at least 16 years or older to be able to handle some of the stuff they have in this anime. The sequences of torture that come in from time to time often makes me cringe. The first season is the darkest in the series so far, the second was not quite as dark, though it did have its moments.

But Higurashi also has a lot of plot to it and is often very funny. It also has some of the best evil laughter in any anime series or anything else for that matter. And we all know slaughter can't not be spelled without laughter. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!
